Undersea cable managed by UAE teleco's operators will take two weeks to repair
Du, the UAE’s second largest telecoms firm, warned users on Monday to expect internet service disruptions after two international undersea telecoms cables managed by their operators were cut, impacting service performance.
“The cable cut may affect some internet users who may witness degradation in internet speed as we expect some slowness especially in peak times,” the company said in a statement.
The first cable cut is “located in Suez, provider of which is OmanTel, and the second is located between Chennai and Singapore, provider of which is Airtel,” it added.
However, the du confirmed in an update on Tuesday that the first cable cut has been restored on late night Monday.
“Repair on the second cable is likely to take one or two weeks according to the cable operators. The cause behind the cuts was not shared by the cable operators," the company said in a statement.
"We confirm once again that there is no impact on internet usage and quality since the issue has been fully contained. We also did not receive any complaints by our customers on degradation of internet speeds experienced as a result of the recent cable cuts," it added.
Du is shifting its focus from growing mobile market share to increasing subscribers to its data package services, its chief commercial officer Farid Faraidooni told Arabian Business earlier this year.
The operator, which currently has a 45 percent share of the UAE mobile market, said subscribers to data package services is increasing four-fold.
The network currently has five million active customers in the UAE.For all the latest tech news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
