du waives video content fee after TV blackout

Dubai telco extends free period for new service by way of compensation.

du waives video content fee after TV blackout

Telco du has said it will waive the AED75 fee for its new Unlimited Video on Demand (UVoD) service, as compensation to customers whose TV service was hit by technical problems last week.

Technical difficulties at du resulted in the loss of a significant section of the company’s television channels on July 12.

Now, du has sent SMS messages to customers offering the new UVoD service for free until the end of September, an extension of the original introductory free offer.

The SMS, sent to customers on Monday evening, said: "We trust that your du TV service is now fully restored. In view of the inconvenience caused, we are waiving the monthly charge of AED75 for Unlimited Video on Demand and extending the serfice to all du TV customers from now until September 30."

The UVoD service, which expands on the company's existing VoD initiative, gives customers unlimited access to movies, TV series, dramas, documentaries, music, lifestyle, kids shows and religious programming.

The company is the second telecoms licensee in the UAE after incumbent Etisalat.

The country's telecommunications watchdog is in the final phase of introducing competition to the market which will allow both companies to offer their services across the UAE and will no longer be restricted to certain areas.

Technical difficulties? Is there anything that actually works at Du? Anyone who has lived in a country with a proper real choice of telecoms providers can't avoid being staggered at the incompetency of Du. Everyone I meet has their own horror stories of dealing with them. Today for about the 4th or 5th time we've had our internet connection at internet city disconnected because they are incapable of billing us! Yet another trip to the Du office, which had people queuing out the door and only a couple of desks open. Apparently the computer system has gone down (I don't know if it has ever actually been up). Payment via the internet (something we had in the UK for about 15 years) isn't possible with Du. Something about it being "insecure". So instead they ask you to email credit card details to them!!!! I could live with blackouts on cable TV. But its impossible to run an internet company without internet. I'm afraid for us that this is probably the end - we will join the exodus to somewhere with a choice of telecoms companies. Bye bye Dubai. If the government here really doesn't understand why people are deserting this place, they need only visit a Du office.

Forget any UVOD services. I just wanted du to activate the fifa world cup package and the platitinum orbit package and du couldn't even achieve that! I live in an established du area (discovery g.) and after 10+ complaints I gave up! All that the customer service rep said was that "your problem has been escalated and we'll look into your problem". Three of them attempted to get my mobile number but nobody called. How's that service for you, du?

I am surprised to read those comments. I have been with Du for the past 3 years and I must say they are great. I get my billings on time, TV is great, if there is a problem it is solved in no time. I pay my bills via internet and never had a problem with that. tell you the truth I did not have to visit the office, even once. I was with Etisalat before and let me tell you what a disaster it was.

They can waive the fees for a new service that few are using because it does nto hurt their business and gets them favourable publicity. They provide nothing to the core clients who are their Pay TV clients. Du...u are meant to provide a service.......du doesn't.

I'm sure they'll end up billing people by mistake then you will run up more than a 100 dhs in phone bills trying to get the charge reversed save being cut off. Cynicism? Not really - just actual experience of dealing with such an incompetent telecoms provider.

Du activated my worldcup option without me asking ( I am out of Dubai for that period). They charged me 275 with the promisse they will remove it after six month subscription to 16MB internet ( I already have the 16 MB subscription cause anything less than that does not allow me to work. Now they are waving 75AED for somthing I dont have? this looks like a nigerian scam. What they have to do is wave the full World cup charge for those who asked for it and not force people who have not asked for it. Du really thing we are dump? Du is forcing people to pay for something they dont want and this is not legal. Are they trying to cheat the market by reporting extra sales for 6 month? This is called market manipulation and is also illegal in most countries.

it seems people will just nag regardless of what happens. Du is offering to give you something u didnt have for free till sep. as a compensation for the tv failure of 1 or 2 days! get real people!! I, like mike, never had any problems with DU. I have tried both providers for many years, Du is by far the better service provider...BY FAR!

all i can say is, lucky you. Just wait till you have a problem and you will never sing the praises of Du again.

I have only used Du so cannot compare it with Etisalat. I have problem with one service of the other at least once every quarter. End up spending a lot of time on hold and arguing with them mostly with no or delayed solution. I checked the Unlimited VOD and it has the worst selection of movies and shows. Not worth a single penny let alone AED 75. That is why they made it free because none of their customers is willing to pay for such service yet. I have heard Etisalat is launching in The Greens where I live soon. Anyone know when that is happening?
