Uber has much reason to celebrate -- as it announced it crossed the 5 billion worldwide trips mark on May 20. To make this happen, 156 trips started simultaneously at 7:29:06am GMT, in 24 countries across six continents in such cities as Dubai, Alexandria, Mumbai and Moscow.
Uber started in 2010 to solve a simple problem: how do you get a ride at the push of a button? In late 2015, Uber made headlines for crossing the 1 billion trips mark. Six months later, the company reached 2 billion rides, and over the past 11 months Uber has witnessed incredible growth to reach an impressive combined 5 billion rides.
In Dubai - Uber’s partner-driver, Sardar Muhammad helped Uber reach the milestone on a trip to Dubai Mall. Sardar has been using the Uber app for about 1 year now, during which time he has completed more than 2,000 trips.
Uber wouldn’t have reached this milestone without the dedicated service of drivers. As a token of appreciation, Uber will be giving each of the 156 drivers who were part of this milestone $500, including Sardar from Dubai.
Sardar Muhammad, who completed one of 156 trips that started simultaneously, said: “I really like working on the Uber app, and I consider myself lucky to be part of completing 5 billion trips globally, thank you very much”
“We are incredibly proud of the pace of growth Uber has experienced, particularly over this last year. Having a partner-driver in Dubai be one of 156 who helped us reach this big milestone, only emphasises the global nature of our business and how important each trip around the world is” Says Chris Free, GM of Uber UAE.
“We have been in Dubai for the past 4 years, and we will continue working towards providing residents of the city with safe, reliable and affordable transportation at the push of a button, and look forward to having Dubai playing a key role in more future company milestones”
