Airport retailer's 25% discount results in over 400,000 sales transactions in three days but fails to match last year's total of $51m
Total sales during a three-day sale at Dubai Duty Free to mark its 32nd anniversary reached more than $48 million, the airport retailer said on Monday.
A special 25 percent discount was offered on a wide range of merchandise between December 17-20 netting sales of AED178.5 million ($48.6 million), down from AED188.86 million last year.
The anniversary discount for 72 hours resulted in a spending spree at Dubai International and at Al Maktoum International with sales figures on December 18 and 19 reaching AED39.05 million and AED39.34 million respectively.
On the anniversary day itself, December 20, Dubai Duty Free's daily sales reached AED100.20 million.
Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman of Dubai Duty Free said: “We are very happy to have achieved such tremendous sales over the anniversary weekend and that so many travelers had the opportunity to avail of the special discount.
“I would like to thank everyone for helping us achieve such sales, in particular thanks to our customers and our staff who did a great job in serving the high number of passengers.”
Watches were the highest selling category with sales of AED23.96 million, representing 24 percent of the total daily sales. Perfumes were the second most popular category with sales of AED23 million, followed by cosmetics (AED15.49 million).
Over the three-day period, the cash registers recorded a total of 402,000 sales transactions with nearly 207,000 sales transactions alone on December 20.For all the latest retail news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
