Dubai expat to sue after Chennai jail 'mistake'

A Dubai-based expat who spent five days in a Chennai jail because of a case of mistaken identity intends to sue the authorities, family members have said.

Sarah Thomas, who travelled from Dubai to Chennai, was held for five days in prison because authorities believed that she was a woman wanted by authorities in relation to insurance fraud.

The Khaleej Times reports that Ms Thomas’ family members had to produce documents in order to prove her real identity to a court in Punalur.

The family members told the newspaper that they plan to sue the officials responsible for detaining her in custody.

The officials at Chennai airport suspected that Ms Thomas was a Sarah Williams who had faked her death while working in London in 2000 so that her husband could claim Rs20 million ($325,912) insurance.
