Joins 175 cities to take part in a global series of Twitter community events
Dubai will be hosting its own Twestival in line with a global series of Twitter community events being held on Thursday 12th February 2009 in more than 175 cities, including London, New York, Tokyo and Istanbul.More than 1,500 people from the Middle East and North Africa use micro-blogging service Twitter, according to research by local PR firm Spot On. Users from the United Arab Emirates make up more than a quarter of this figure, amounting to a little over 500 Twitterers by January 2009 with a monthly growth rate of more than 20% per month.
While the numbers may not be impressive by global standards, UAE residents have been able to access the site only a few months ago. Twitter.com was initially banned under directives from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority before finally being unblocked in late August last year.
Twestival aims to bring together Twitter communities all over the world to raise money and awareness for the charity: water. The Dubai Twestival is scheduled to take place at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi's Barasti Bar, with registration limited to the first 100 tweeters that confirm their attendance. For more information on the event, visit the Dubai Twestival website.
Twitter was launched by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in July 2006. By December 2008, the website registered an annual growth of 752% with nearly 6 million user accounts. For all the latest tech news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
You gotta be quick - Twestival registrations are going through the roof and registrations are going to fill up faster than you can say 'Identity card'. We'll have to start thinking about an application application!!!
This is great for us Dubai based tweeters - I'm convinced we'll double active twitters month on month! A great way to connect.....
