Dubai imported 33.743 million tonnes of food stuff in 2016, according to Dubai Municipality.

The number of food shipments increased to 351,761 last year compared to 339,979 in 2015, Dr Essam Al Hashimi, Head of Food Trade Control Section of Dubai Municipality said on Monday.

The civic body confirmed that the proportion of damaged food reduced significantly compared to previous years due to the government’s strict policies on food imports.

“In 2013, we destroyed 30,420 kilogramme of damaged food, while the damaged food destroyed during the past year was only 13,952 kilogramme,” Al Hashimi said.

The number of food import and export companies in Dubai have increased to 3,253 in 2016 from 886 in 2013, the official said.
