Dubai Mall opens doors in August

Shopping centre will be eighth largest in world, featuring 1,200 stores, ice rink, gold souk and acquarium.

Emaar Malls will open the doors to Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping centres in the world, on August 28, the company said on Wednesday.

With a gross leasable area (GLA) of 3.77 million square feet - around size of 50 football fields - Dubai Mall will be the largest in the Middle East and join a growing number of shopping centres in Dubai as the government looks to turn the emirate into a global retail tourism hub.

The mall will boast over 1,200 stores, an Olympic-sized ice rink, the world’s largest indoor gold souk, one of the world's largest indoor aquariums and a car park with a 14,000-vehicle capacity.

However, Dubai Mall will only rank as the eighth largest mall in the world, overtaking the City North mall and Megamall in Metro Manila, the Philippines, both of which have a GLA of 3.6 million square feet.

The largest mall in the world is the South China Mall in Dongguan, China, with a GLA of 6.5 million square feet, followed by Jin Yuan (Golden Resources Mall) in Beijing with a GLA of 6.0 million square feet.

The five biggest malls in the world are all in Asia, with two in China, one in Thailand, one in Taiwan and one in the Philippines.

Dubai Mall is part of Emaar Properties' $20 billion Downtown Burj Dubai development will include the world's tallest building the Burj Dubai, 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 6.2 acres of parkland, 19 residential towers and a 30-acre manmade lake.
