Asian man said he “was overpowered by tiredness”
The minibus driver involved in the fatal accident that claimed the life of a driver in a parked car has been jailed for six months, after which he will be deported, according to a report on Gulf News.
The court heard that the Asian driver fell asleep at the wheel after he “was overpowered by tiredness”, which led to the minibus crashing into a parked car in May this year.
The 29-year-old driver, in a rare ruling for a traffic offence, was sentenced to six months in jail, to be followed by deportation.
Presiding judge Jamal Jubaily also fined the defendant AED5,000 ($1,361) and ordered him to pay AED200,000 in blood money to the family of the deceased.
According to the report in Gulf News, court records in Dubai show that it is rare for a traffic court to deport a defendant who is involved in a traffic accident.
Salah Bu Farousha, head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution said they sought the toughest punishment for the driver, who was found to be “over-fatigued and very sleepy”. The driver lost control of the minibus and crashed into a parked car, killing the driver and injuring a female passenger.
