Remote controlled security device is thought to be the first of its kind

Dubai Police has designed and produced a drone to defuse bombs – thought to be the first of its kind, it told media in a statement.

The Department of Explosive Security at the General Directorate for Security of Entities, Establishments and Emergency has tested the device, which is intended to be used to detonate timed bombs that require rapid intervention, according to Dubai Police commander-in-chief Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri.

The drone can fly for ten minutes and is equipped with a water gun that is shot remotely to defuse a bomb.

It can also be used to break glass and windows in vehicles and buildings, and is equipped with a camera to help explosives experts defuse bombs remotely, the statement said.

Dubai Police aims to increase its use of cutting-edge technologies and security techniques to improve its work.

The drone was designed by First Warrant Officer Hamad Rashid Al Duwaij Al Falasi and staff Sergeant Mohamed Soliman Al Bloushi at the Explosives Security Department.
