Figures released ahead of this year's festival show slight drop in amount spent.
Retail sales during last year’s Dubai Shopping Festival fell 2 percent from the previous year, the National reported on Monday.
Some AED9.8bn ($2.66bn) was spent on goods during 2009’s retail festival compared to AED10bn in 2008, the paper reported.
But, the number of visitors to the festival rose 4.6 percent to 3.35 million, according to the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE).
“Despite a decrease in spending figures, the decline is minimal,” Laila Suhail, DEPE chief executive, told the paper.
The data also showed the number of participating retailers grew during that time, with 6,000 retailers in 2009, compared with 4,000 in 2008.
This year’s event is set to start on January 28 until February 28.
