Dubai saw gold and jewellery sales worth almost 500 million dirhams ($136 million) during this year's 65-day Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS), which concluded on Friday, the emirate's jewellery retail association said in a statement on Saturday.
According to Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) which ran the 'Glittering Surprises' campaign, sales were driven by strong expatriate demand, holiday shopping bonanzas and relatively lower prices of gold.
"Dubai is still the best place to buy high quality and variety of jewellery at the world's best prices," Tawhid Abdullah, DGJG's managing director was quoted as saying.
No comparisons were previous years were given.
"UAE residents, including expatriates and nationals, dominated 'Glittering Surprises', winning 88 percent of the prizes. The rest of the winners were tourists," Swapna Nair, DGJG's general manager said in a statement.
Winners came from more than a dozen countries including UAE, UK, USA, Russia, Greece, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Egypt, Iran and Iraq, Swapna added.
This year was DGJG's sixth year of association with Dubai Summer Surprises. For all the latest retail news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
