Construction is underway at Dubai World Central (DWC), the 140km² aviation community being built in Jebel Ali.

And the project’s 4.5 km CAT-III runway, designed to accommodate the A380 super jumbo, will be ready for action by the end of this year, according to DWC officials.

“First flights at JXB are expected by mid-2008, when the first passenger and cargo terminals will be ready,” said Abdulla Alfalasi, marketing and communications director, DWC.

Meanwhile, a US $408 million building contract for Dubai Logistics City (DLC), set to become a hub for all of Dubai’s transportation management and logistical services was recently awarded to Kuwaiti firm, M.A. Kharafi & Sons.

Spanning 25km², DLC is designed to handle 12 million tonnes of air cargo annually in up to 16 air cargo terminals by the time it is finished in March 2009.

DLC and its state-of-the-art facilities will help position Dubai as a regional hub for integrated supply chain management and multi-modal transport, said CEO, Michael Profitt.
