Following the success of this year’s Dubai Open Chess Championship, Emirates Internet and Multimedia (EIM) has launched an online chess game on its Mplayer-Arabia gaming service much to the pleasure of the online gaming community. Chess is the sixth classic game of the Mplayer-Arabia service and takes the total number of games to 23. “Chess has a long tradition in the UAE and the Middle East with world class tournaments taking place in the region each year,” commented Andy Maclean, media consultant of the Dubai Grand Prix Chess Championships. “The Mplayer-Arabia version of the game should certainly help to further encourage players in the UAE to log on and challenge other gamers from around the world to what has become a truly global game.” EIM is reported to have introduced chess owing to the high number of requests asking for the game to be included on the service. “In a sense we are bringing like minded people together from across the globe and connecting them through the universal game of chess,” commented Maroua Naim, general manager, EIM. “Our gaming site allows people not only to play our games, but also to chat and spectate.” The Web site currently supports over 25 local leagues online for its various games. Some of these leagues have over 800 members, and at any given time, EIM claims to have at least 600 active players, meaning that they log in at least once in three days.
