EMC and Oracle team up to 'clone' corporate data

EMC and Oracle have collaborated to promote data protection best practices in application testing, back-up and hardware migrations.

Oracle and EMC have teamed up to promote data protection best practices in application testing, back-up, recovery and hardware migrations. The joint initiative will enable organisations to clone business critical data, while the original application continues to operate.Currently, many IT managers have to copy data manually, which is both time-consuming and can often result in inaccurate information and costly mistakes. The certified joint best practice automates and improves the process, enabling IT managers to use cloned data in upgrading or decision support projects, while the original production systems remain online.“EMC and Oracle are working closely together to automate a tedious, error-prone process for customers in the region,” says Qais Gharaibeh, EMC Middle East’s regional partner sales manager.“In simple terms, this means our joint customer base in the region will be able to accomplish more with their applications and find them easier to manage. As more companies in the Middle East migrate onto single, integrated enterprise applications, this best practice approach will provide IT managers with a critical business tool,” he adds. The initiative is the result of extensive ‘collaborative’ engineering between both vendors. The cloning technique works by leveraging the EMC TimeFinder, which creates multiple copies of data within a single storage system, while Oracle’s AutoConfig simplifies the configuration of the application environment. The vendors claim that the new approach is more effective than copying databases because the application clones it creates contain information from both databases and applications, and so are much easier to use offline. Consequently, IT managers can make changes to the system with minimal impact on operational efficiency or network resources.“The combination of Oracle and EMC technologies helps customers outsmart, outrun and outperform their competition,” comments Ayman Abouseif, marketing director, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Oracle Corp. “Together, Oracle and EMC have developed a comprehensive solution that fully automates the cloning process and delivers a host of business benefits to companies here,” he adds.
