Emirates Airline now the world's third largest carrier

Dubai-based giant will produce 16.9bn available seat kilometres this month - Innovata data

Emirates Airline's growth strategy has just made it the world's third largest carrier by capacity, latest data by Innovata has shown.

With 144 aircraft in its fleet, the Dubai-based airline has overtaken US carrier United and is now behind only Delta and American Airlines, Emirates Business reported on Friday, quoting Innovata.

The paper said data shows Emirates will produce 16.9 billion available seat kilometres (ASKs) in March 2011, up 9.9 percent year-on-year, while United’s capacity has dropped to just under 16bn ASKs.

Delta Air Lines and American retain first and second rankings, with 28.4bn and 21.8bn ASKs. British Airways is ninth in the list.

Emirates already has 15 Airbus A380 superjumbos in its fleet, with 75 more to come – plus 53 stretched Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Other notable movers include Qatar Airways, whose capacity grew more than 20 percent, the report added.

Emirates on Tuesday said it will raise fares from Tuesday as oil market speculation sends fuel costs soaring.

An Emirates spokesperson told Arabian Business that the airline had raised ticket prices, but the increase would “differ by markets and routes.”

“Like every commercially-oriented business, Emirates regularly reviews its fares to reflect market dynamics including demand and rising fuel prices.” she said.

“We have an active fuel risk management programme but with such market volatility it is impossible to fully absorb the impact of soaring oil prices."

Fantastic achievement for Emirates, one of the best Brands in the Skies and they deliver on their promise. Soon we will see some Airlines going out of business especially those who are not customer centric. Great ease of transfers and superb product in all classes for Emirates. Strategy is spot on and will continue to make leaps and bounds on the international front backed up by strong infrastructure in Dubai, Airport expansion and the right Visa regulations.
