EIDA grants six-month extension for Emiratis; plans to link expats' registration with the issuance or renewal of residency visas
The Emirates Identity Authority, the body behind the UAE-wide rollout of identity cards, has extended the deadline for Emiratis and foreign workers yet to register for the cards.
Under the new timescale, Emiratis have been given until June 30, 2011 to register, a six-month extension, while expatriate workers can register whenever they renew or apply for a residency visa.
The EIDA has yet to clarify what fines will be imposed on Emiratis who fail to meet the deadline.
According to the agency, more than 1.5m residents registered for cards in 2010.
Some places are saying its been extended for nationals and expats, your article says only nationals. Can we get some clarification on this?
I spent 4 hours at Al Tawoon center in Sharjah to 'renew' my expired Emirates ID which someone told me should not take more than an hour at the most. Then upon reaching the ONE counter where renewal was going on, the lady there was chatting on her Blackberry messenger while renewing the ID. Very frustrating.
