Passengers on board an Emirates flight to New York were yesterday diverted to Sweden after a burning smell was detected in the plane’s cabin.

Flight EK203 was en route to New York’s John F Kennedy Airport with 361 passengers on board, when the odour was noticed.

The Boeing 777 diverted to Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport, where passengers were forced to wait on board the flight for five hours while safety checks were carried out.

Dubai-based Emirates said the flight was later cleared to continue to New York.

“[The flight] was diverted to Stockholm as a safety precaution after an unusual odour was detected in the cabin,” the airline said in a statement.

“An inspection was carried out and the aircraft was cleared to continue its journey to its final destination.”
