End 2010 deadline for UAE ID cards

Officials warn there will be no further grace period after this time, rule applies to all expats, nationals.

End 2010 deadline for UAE ID cards
CUT OFF DATE: All residents and nationals must have an ID card by the end of the year, officials said.

All residents in the UAE must get an identity car by the end of the year, a top official has said.

Major General Nasser Al Menhali, assistant director-general of naturalisation and residency, said there will be no further grace period after this time.

He urged people who do not have the card already to use this time to apply for the card, WAM news agency reported.

Earlier this month officials said registration for the mandatory cards will be cut from a whole day to five minutes with the introduction of a series of new registration centres.

These new centres will be able to process 20,000 applicants per day - almost tripling the current level.

Al Menhali said ID cards will be used to streamline and speed up all the ministry's services, including the issuance of passports, licences for private security companies and firearms, as well as certificates of compliance with civil defence security and safety requirements.

And what does this card do for me as an ex-pat? Many things were promised but nothing delivered yet. I still have a passport with a residency visa, a health card, a labour card, a drivers license and an e-gate card. And I carry photocopies of these as well when necessary. And they want me to buy this for ..... ????

I have today tried to make an online appointment and the page says there are currently no appointments available. It is all well and good to impose a deadline however; how are we to abide by this when we cannot even get an appointment?

Seahorse88 10 years ago

I did the same... tried to have an appointment... even bought the envelope for 40Dhs each and dropped them last year hoping they will contact me... but no one did. So, me and my family decided to WALK-IN one of the EID application office... and did it only in less than 2 hours... if you are alone maybe it will not take even 1hour... So, I guess... since this host country requires us to have it... then might as well apply now... than be sorry later... It's your call though! Goodluck!

I thought the whole ID card system had been scrapped and was going to be replaced with a new system at the point of residence visa renewal. More confusion

I dont know what you guys are talking about, but the card displayed in the picture above is for UAE nationals only. I heard about a separate ID card for non-nationals, but I'm not sure if its being issued.

Got my ID card last year, took hours of queing to do. Anyway, armed with my new ID card, went to a bank to cash a cheque and guess what? Bank ( Local Bank) would NOT accept it as identification! Same when I went a few months later to get my deposit back from immigration department for my wifes visa. So tell me, what is the use of getting this card? Pure money -making exercise if you ask me.

To 'Mohd Dubai' I am British and my ID card is identical in every way to the one shown except after Nationality it says 'United Kingdom'. Tip: Karama post office in the evenong around 7 is almost empty - I did everything from scratch, including paperwork in less than an hour.
