Welsh-born Lazarus set up MA Model Academy, a platform for new and established models helping them to develop their careers in the Middle East
It was one particular moment in 2008 that proved to be a point of departure for Lisa Lazarus, a Dubai-based British model-turned-serial entrepreneur and our latest Entrepreneur of the Week.
Winning the Miss Universe UK 2008 pageant has opened a number of opportunities for the Wales-born beauty, including a Bollywood debut opposite Indian actor Salman Khan.
The beauty contest success has also led to her supporting a number of charities. Lazarus is an ambassador of The Joshua Foundation, a Cardiff-based charity that organises holidays and trips for terminally-ill children.
Furthermore, once successful catwalk model for brands including Elizabeth Arden and Jovani Couture, Lazarus has also chosen to pursue her academic objectives and earned a bachelor degree in diagnostic radiography at Hertfordshire University. At the moment she is doing her master's degree in aesthetics.
In 2013 she successfully launched her first business venture – Medico Aesthetics, a provider of non-invasive cosmetic surgery.
After moving to Dubai in the same year, Lazarus set up MA Model Academy, a platform for new and established models helping them to develop their careers in the Middle East.
“As a woman and an expat in Dubai, I have had a lot to learn," she says about setting up a business in the UAE. "The biggest obstacle was coming to terms with different laws and agreements. I spent over a year researching the industry before launching. I had to do a lot of homework.
“I am grateful to the people I have met who have supported me and guided me in the right direction. I think it can be easy to be led astray, so it is very important to keep your vision and focus on your goal.
“I used to travel a lot with modelling assignments so now it is nice to be settled in Dubai and work on building a solid future here.
"Anything is possible here [in Dubai]. You just need to be committed and hardworking, and have a great team.”
