Firm uses the power of film to draw attention to important societal issues and inspire UAE residents and visitors
Vikas Punjabi has been awarded this week’s Entrepreneur of the Week accolade for initiating a series of inspirational pop-up film screenings across the UAE.
Punjabi – the founder of Loco’Motion, a Dubai-based social enterprise – uses the power of film to draw attention to important societal issues and inspire UAE residents and visitors alike to contribute to their communities.
It started in 2013 when he screened 'Five', a 2011 anthology of short films exploring the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives, in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to mark October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month that year.
Since then, Loco’Motion has brought thousands of viewers together in Safa Park and thejamjar, a gallery and studio located in Al Serkal Avenue, Al Quoz.
“We are focused on enriching residents through entertaining content on genres ranging from environment to health and well-being, love and friendship to women and children, history and culture to entrepreneurship and Inspiration,” he told Arabian Business StartUp.
“The prime objective is to foster a sense of community amongst residents and corporations alike through meaningful and inspiring content.”
A number of local companies, which are motivated to contribute to the community, have come on board as sponsors of the events. However, Punjabi was quoted as saying to local media that he often covered the costs of the screenings by himself.
In 2015 his team organised their first screening at a university and also launched the second season of their ”Inspire Life” series. Their regular events are often timed to mark important international observances, such as International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, World Environment Day, and many more.
Talking about their plans for 2016, Punjabi said he hopes to launch Season III of “Inspire Life” and involve and engage more members of the community.
Punjabi is also the founder of Urban Bedou, an arts and culture event business.
