Epson speeds up PictureMate series

Epson has launched the PictureMate 500, a portable photo printer that the company claims allows users to print affordable photo-lab quality photos 40% faster than using its original PictureMate.

Epson has launched the PictureMate 500, a portable photo printer that the company claims allows users to print affordable photo-lab quality photos 40% faster than using its original PictureMate.

The printer is capable of 10 x 15cm prints and boasts a convenient 2.4” LCD screen, which allows users to preview and touch-up photos. There is also an optional battery feature, which Epson reckons makes it a truly portable product.

The PictureMate 500 supports direct-printing via PictBridge, USB Direct Print, SD, MultiMedia Card, Compact Flash type I and II, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, xD and Microdrive solid-state media. DPOF and Print Image Matching are also offered and users can transfer photos from their mobile camera phone via an optional Bluetooth adapter.

The company claims that the 500 can print a single quality photo in just over a minute.

“Home users who expect professional quality results from photo printers will find the Epson PictureMate 500 an amazing machine, enabling them to capture those special events like a birthday party, wedding or night out, with quality that can rival photos printed at labs,” stated Khalil El Dalu, general manager, Epson Middle East.

Epson also claims the key advantage of its new printer is the low cost per photo. The company attributes this to its $29.97 PicturePack, which contains a PictureMate photo-cartridge and 135 A6 sheets. This means the cost per photo is approximately $0.22 per photo compared to the average cost of a photo lab digital print, which is $0.27.

The printer retails for approximately $231, though the company won’t officially publicise it until Gitex 2005.
