Etisalat awards cable TV contract

Alcatel and Thomson Broadcast have won a deal to build a CATV network for E-Vision, Etisalat's cable TV subsidiary.

Etisalat has awarded a contract worth AED 185 million for cable television services to subscribers in the UAE. The contract was granted to a consortium including electronics vendor Alcatel and digital TV supplier Thomson Broadcast.The consortium will start with a survey of coverage areas, followed by a network rollout to an estimated 80,000 stations, with the intention of serving 100,000 subscribers by the second half of this year, Alcatel claims.E-Vision, a subsidiary of Etisalat, will use the CATV (Community Antenna Television) network to offer broadband Internet access and video-on-demand services. The company’s Phase I initial coverage areas include parts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with further nationwide coverage to come later.E-Vision’s web site is at www.evision.co.ae
