Etisalat boosts IT operations in Egypt

The operator has installed hardware and software from Sun Microsystems to help run core systems.

Etisalat Misr, the Egyptian arm of the UAE telecom operator, has installed hardware and software from Sun Microsystems to support its business operations.

The operator said today it is using US firm’s technology as the core of its business support system (BSS), which covers product, customer and revenue management.

The technology will also be used as the core of Etisalat Misr’s operating support system (OSS), which covers data, processes and applications.

Sun has provided Etisalat Misr with its Sun Fire servers, Solaris operating system and Java system directory server. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

“This is a significant deployment for Sun not only in the region, but also in the telecom sector and clearly reflects our growing success in Egypt,” said Chris Cornelius, regional managing director of Sun Microsystems.

“We remain committed to support Etisalat Misr in its drive to expand its presence, increase subscriber base and become a leading service provider in Egypt,” he added.

Etisalat Misr already runs its text message platform on Sun technology.
