Etisalat, the UAE's first and largest telecomms provider, is set to roll out a new Internet Protocol (IP) based network architecture from Alcatel-Lucent.

The telco, which has committed to moving to an all-IP network over the coming years, will deploy a range of Alcatel-Lucent systems. These will complement Etisalat's existing service routing solution, which is also based around Alcatel-Lucent technology.

"The transformation of operator networks is a trend we continue to see in all regions around the world as our customers strive to maintain an edge in this competitive marketplace," says Olivier Picard, president of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in Europe and South.

"We are very pleased that Etisalat, the leading service provider in the Middle East, continues to choose highly available and scalable Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS solutions as part of the foundation for its fully converged network," he adds.

This win reinforces Alcatel-Lucent's position as the number two vendor in the IP/MPLS space, with a 20% share of the market, according to Ovum-RHK. The firm is also the fastest-growing routing vendor in the world.
