Donald Trump wants to build a luxury hotel in Dubai, the US billionaire has exclusively revealed to Arabian Business.
“I’d like to build a hotel in Dubai someday; I think building a hotel in Dubai would be a great honour,” Trump said during an interview this week.
“I would like to do a true luxury Trump International hotel in Dubai at some point.
“I don’t know [when]. We’ve discussed this with a number of people and they would love us to come and do a hotel. We almost did one but the world market crashed and we held off – intelligently, I might add. We should get credit for that.”
The flamboyant real estate mogul has finally got his first project in Dubai off the mark, with an 18-hole professional golf course and 100 luxury villas as part of the Akoya by Damac master development near Arabian Ranches.
He had planned to build Trump Towers, a mixed-use development that would have included a hotel, on Nakheel’s man-made The Palm Jumeirah but the project was cancelled due to the financial crisis, which caused Dubai property prices to plummet by 60 percent.
Trump said it had been a “smart” move to axe the tower and insisted it had not been Nakheel’s fault. He still had a “great” relationship with them, although he did not envisage another deal with the indebted Dubai developer.
Trump said he was confident the emirate’s property market had returned and was now “only going to go up”.
While he would like to do another project in the region, it would not be a second golf course.
“I’m not going to be able to top this [the golf course at Akoya],” he said.
“I only do something if I can top it and I’m not going to be able to top this golf course in the Middle East, you just can’t do it.
“I would say that I could very well do something else in Dubai. Dubai is a great place, it’s vibrant, it’s incredible.”
The Trump International golf course is due to be completed next year. For all the latest travel news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
