A Western professor has been fired from a Saudi college for insulting Islam and allegedly making racist comments, according to Arabic daily Al Madinah.

Students at Laureate College of Excellence in Jeddah complained that the expatriate professor chastised the Islamic pilgrimages of Umrah and Haj as “stupid”.

They claimed staff at the college, who are all Western non-Muslims, refused to respond when they reported the comments, the newspaper said.

Action was reportedly eventually taken when the students escalated their complaint to the over-seeing body, the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC).

“There is no one in the [college’s] administration that is an Arab or Muslim and whenever we complained they would kick us out or ignore us,” a student was quoted as saying.

“We decided to take this to the press because no one listened to us and we do not accept what was said about Islam.”

TVTC spokesman Fahd Al Otaibi reportedly said the corporation formed a committee to follow up on the complaint, which was verified.

“The corporation terminated the professor’s contract immediately as he violated the Ministry of Labor’s charter that outlines the importance of good conduct and respect toward Islam and violated the Laureate College of Excellence’s policy of religious tolerance,” Al Otaibi was quoted as saying.

It seems to me that the Saudis could show some religious tolerance. This is a country where a Christian can't own a Bible. I'm not saying that what he did was very smart.

"violated the Laureate College of Excellence’s policy of religious tolerance"

Doesn't Saudi Arabia realise how this looks hypocritical to the rest of the world when all religions but Islam are banned in the kingdom?

What you quoted there John was the College's policy. The professor was fired because, among other violations, he infringed the Laureate College's policy of religious tolerance. This college is part of Laureate International Universities which span 29 countries throughout the world.
You would've done better had you criticised the professor for his transgression, don't you think....

Any Western non-Muslim who works in the Gulf's education sector will tell you this sounds like students targeting a professor they don't like.
