Fastlink looks to the future

Jordan's oldest mobile phone operator has joined forces with Brighpoint to boost the company's m-commerce and prepaid services. Will a rise in prepaid availability send subscriber numbers surging?

The future of m-commerce came a step closer today after Fastlink signed an integrated service agreement with Brightpoint Jordan, a provider of outsourced services in the wireless telecoms and data industry.

The agreement means that Fastlink, Jordan’s first mobile operator, will benefit from Brightpoint’s expertise in mobile solutions, particularly in the field of prepay and e-commerce.

“Under the agreement, we will provide Fastlink with a variety of integrated logistics services, including procurement, kitting, warehousing and project and data management related to Fastlink’s prepaid service,” said Jac Currie, managing director of Brightpoint Middle East.

Prepaid Systems Boost Popularity

Founded in 1985, Fastlink now serves 300,000 subscribers via 600 sites that cover 99% of Jordan’s population.

The proliferation of prepaid systems provided a huge boost for mobile telephony in Europe, and was particularly popular among young people who were unable or unwilling to sign long-term contracts.

It is hoped that an increase in the availability of prepaid services will lead to a rise in the number of Jordanian mobile users.

Jordan already has one of the healthiest mobile markets in the region, following deregulation last year.

Fastlink, and its rival MobileCom, are now both offering a range of SMS and WAP services to the Kingdom.
