As well as providing an opportunity to attend conferences and seminars, this month's 2007 FDI Annual World Dental Congress hosts suppliers of the latest dental technology and equipment. Here are some of the companies worth a visit between October 24 and 27.

Dürr Dental

The success of medical treatment stands or falls with the quality of diagnosis. Imaging processes can be invaluable in such work. Dürr Dental has recently developed ‘VistaProof', a camera capable of detecting caries quickly and reliably. It distinctly shows decay, even in fissures and on occluded surfaces where to the naked eye or on X-ray photographs it is hard to detect or even invisible. Dürr Dental is exhibiting the new system at the 2007 FDI Annual World Dental Congress.

VistaProof is the first caries diagnosis system from Dürr Dental based on the fluorescence principle. It reliably detects fissure and occlusal caries tooth by tooth, following professional cleaning, and is just as fast as mirror examination of the teeth. According to Dürr, no details escape detection under these powerful light-emitting diodes, which stimulate fluorescence in bacterial porphyrins at a wavelength of 405 nanometres. With the aid of high-performance software, the monitor displays a false-colour image on which active caries appear in red and healthy tooth enamel in green. VistaProof also shows caries that it had not previously been possible to detect visually. The software provides an orientation aid for initial diagnostic and therapeutic assessments by the dentist with a scale from 0 to 5: observation, re-mineralisation or invasive treatment.

In early 2002, Remedent launched its RemeCure curing and whitening device, a light that cures composites in three seconds and features a hands-free automated bleaching mode that is ideal for RemeWhite In-Office whitening. This light is designed for maximum curing and whitening power and performs all dental treatments requiring light curing.

RemeWhite In-Office Whitening kits are used in combination with RemeCure. These whitening products contain a high concentration of active ingredient, yet Remedent claims that they cause no burning or sensitivity, and gingival protection is not required. This is due to a technology called Extracted Aqueous Barrier (EAB) that protects gingival tissues and creates a chemical barrier to block out peroxide.

The Wrigley Company, as the world's leading manufacturer of chewing gum, has worked in partnership with the dental profession for 25 years helping to improve people's oral health. Its trade initiative, Wrigley Oral Healthcare Programs (Wrigley OHP), operates successfully in 47 countries globally. The aim of the programme is to support dental professionals by providing them with information and practical resources to promote a healthy oral care routine amongst their patients, including the benefits of chewing sugarfree gum.

According to Wrigley, chewing sugarfree gum after meals and snacks is a great way to maintain oral heath during the day when brushing is not possible. Chewing sugarfree gum, such as Extra, may stimulate the production of saliva in the mouth that helps to neutralize plaque acid, to clear food debris, to reduce the build up of dental plaque and consequently reduce the risk of tooth decay. Wrigley's sugarfree gum is recognized by the FDI World Dental Federation. Visitors to the Wrigley stand will be able to sample products from around the world.

Schütz Dental Group

The Schütz Dental Group has been owner-managed since its foundation in 1962. The Schütz Dental Group was one of the first companies in the world to gain certification to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 and DIN EN ISO 13485, and its medical devices are manufactured to ISO-certified standards.

The Schütz Dental Group is one of the few companies that covers not only dental laboratory products, but also dentistry and high quality systems. Materials and equipment for dentistry and dental engineering form the backbone of the Schütz Dental Group and cover such specialities as laser technology, implants, titanium and high-tech chemistry.

The company headquarters are based in Rosbach in Germany, just 25km north of Frankfurt International Airport. This, the company says, is an important factor in enabling Schütz Dental products to be sold into all major markets across the world.
