Feel good, look good

Anil Bhoyrul gets some executive pampering at Dubai's Gentlemen's Spa.

From the moment you walk into the Gentlemen's Spa in Dubai's Jumeirah Beach Road, you know you're about to have something special. The layout of the fabulous two storey villa is more like a seven star health farm - it looks good, it smells good, it feels good. And it is damn good!

The centre offers seven different types of treatment - everything from body care and massage to grooming and waxing. But before you do any kind of skin treatment, all visitors are seen by a consultant who decides what's best for you.

And it's no ordinary consultation - the spa uses state of the art technology to assess your sebum levels, moisture levels, pore size, roughness, keratinisation (tough dead skin collected on the surface), wrinkles and pigmentation (sun damage and age spots). The results are instant; you are shown various graphs that explain where treatment is needed.

I had the Hydrapeel facial. This treatment uses skin-repairing formulations and is safe for all skin types, but it's a complex and lengthy treatment lasting nearly 90 minutes.

It begins with a manual cleanse of the skin (with therapists' hands), followed by cleansing using the hydra-facial machine. After some steaming comes the process of "cleanse/ exfoliate/hydrate using the hydrafacial machine". There is then a vacuum suction tip - to extract impurities from pores.

The serum application occurs using the hydrafacial machine - antioxidants to fight off free radicals that attack the skin and cause ageing. The pre-glycolic solution is then applied to remove any impurities from the skin and any other products.

The application (glycolic acid is a type of Alpha hydroxy acid) lasts three-five minutes (this is where you feel a tingling sensation as the dead skin is removed by the glycolic peel). After that, the glycolic is removed with a neutraliser.

So after all this, what's the end result? There is no doubt you feel extremely fresh and initially quite glowing. After around three-four hours there is some reddening on the face, but don't be alarmed, it's part the process and soon disappears.

By the following day, there is certainly a smoothness to the skin that wasn't there before, and two weeks on, more than a few people are likely to have commented on your "fresh look".

The technology seems ultra fancy but what really makes the spa stand out is the quality of service - extremely friendly and professional - and more than your fair share of carrot juice to make you feel you have entered a unique health farm.

It's well worth a go - the consultant recommends having some skin treatment once a month. Prices vary depending on what you have, but even in these difficult times, AED500 worth of treatment goes a long way and is money well spent.
