Filters, not age restrictions are the way forward

We all knew it was going to happen, but now the age limit imposed on imported trucks throughout the UAE, things are about to get serious - especially for the dealers who have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in unsold stock.

We all knew it was going to happen, but now the age limit imposed on imported trucks throughout the UAE, things are about to get serious - especially for the dealers who have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in unsold stock.

Things are worse still for people who need to re-register older light trucks and cars - they just won't be able to.

Of course, soot and other particulate matter are one of the main causes of pollution and probably the primary reason why the country's cities have seen grey smoggy skies so much recently. Anybody who pretends differently is living in a cloud-cuckoo land.

However, the scatter-gun approach by the authorities will serve nobody, particularly as there has been no attempt to adopt either the US or Euro standard for diesel emissions.

In fact, the opposite might be true. In theory truck dealers might float off pre-2002 stock that met the EuroII requirements and instead bring in new vehicles form the Far East that don't meet any standard at all.

We'd urge the central government to rethink this policy. One interesting way of bringing older vehicles in line would be to equip them with aftermarket filters. In fact, two large firms have just started a joint venture making such things and other companies are sure to follow.

Let's hope common sense prevails.
