Expert underlines need for properly maintained fire protection in buildings.
Dubai needs world-class fire protection to compliment its world-class buildings according to a fire protection expert.
Speaking in response to Dubai's recent fires, Alan Oliver, director, Checkmate Fire Solutions, said the correct installation of fire protection components in new buildings was key to increasing Dubai's overall fire safety: "A building's fire protection components have to be correctly installed and adequately maintained to deliver and sustain the necessary level of fire protection. The designed fire safety of a building often only applies in terms of means of escape and life safety, so the clients who occupy these buildings need to put additional measures into place to ensure the fire protection of their business."
He also stated the importance of passive fire protection in stopping the spread of fires. This can include fire resistant coatings used on structural steel, fire doors and fire stopping systems.
The latter seal the service penetrations, gaps and other imperfections in fire compartment walls and floors to ensure that smoke and fire do not spread throughout a building.
"During the fit out period the fire compartmentation will often be damaged by the fitting of cabling and other services. FMs have a duty and a legal responsibility to deal with these issues. Buildings should be regularly surveyed and defects to fire compartmentation should be reinstated by trained installers using the correct materials tested to provide the necessary fire rating," he added.
