Qatar’s first resort attached to a theme park is set to open in early 2017.

Salwa Resort and Spa, which is located next to Aqua Park waterpark, was designed to attract more visitors to the country’s first-ever theme park, according to Mohamed Firdaus Raj, General Manager of Aqua Park Qatar.

“Ninety percent of the hotel is complete and interior work is set to start. It will have its soft opening by first or second quarter next year,” Raj told the Peninsula Qatar.

The hotel will contain more than 70 rooms and nine private villas and will get visitors free access to the waterpark.

The Aqua Park, launched six years ago, welcomes up to 180,000 visitors each year from April to November. Most of the visitors are Saudis visiting Qatar during the Eid holidays, according to Raj.

“This is a good number considering our type of market,” he said. “We are not worried with the number. It looks strong and I think if we continue developing, we will achieve better numbers and Qatar Tourism Authority’s initiative to promote Qatar as a leading destination will help.”

Raj said the waterpark will likely undergo expansion plans to be completed by 2019.
