Five people have been arrested for attempting to smuggle classified documents out of Kuwait in a shipping container, local media has reported.

The documents included papers from the interior and defense ministries, including police and military IDs, secret letters of the Ministry of Education, the Traffic General Department, Ministry of Social Affairs and Kuwait University, said the source who spoke to Al Anbaa on the condition of anonymity.

Correspondence between state departments, including “highly classified letters” and details of bank customers and their accounts were also seized.

The source said the smuggling attempt was “the first of its kind” in Kuwait’s history.

The container was intercepted at Shuwaikh Port before it was loaded onto a ship bound for India.

No details of the suspects have been released.
