Jose Eber has been a hairstylist to the stars for decades. Hollywood A-listers like actress Elizabeth Taylor and singer Cher are among the few names he’s worked with.

With three salons across the US, he has succeeded in acquiring a large local and international following.

His popularity led him to launch his first-ever salon outside the US here in Dubai, the Jose Eber Laloge, located in Emirates Hills. We caught up with Eber to find out everything from style tips to exclusive treatments.

1. There are several hundred hair salons in Dubai, and they all claim to be luxurious, with some of them partly owned by celebrity hairstylists like yourself. What makes Jose Eber Laloge stand out from the crowd?

Jose Eber Laloge brings the expertise of diverse styles and techniques seen around the world under one roof, you don’t find that in any salon.

It also offers a luxurious setting where crystal chandeliers, Fendi furniture, and gold tiled walls are featured. That is unlike anything here in the city.

In addition, most of my stylists and I will be visiting Dubai to train and develop Laloge experts on the latest style technology. So our customers will always be up to date when it comes to trends and techniques. It’s an on-going improvement when it comes to our offerings.

2. Do you offer treatments or services that are exclusive to your salon and which cannot be found elsewhere? If yes, what are they?

Both our ladies and men’s salons offer treatments that are unique to Dubai, in their ingredients and in their methods.

If I were to pick one of each, I would say the luxury Caviar treatment for the ladies.

It rehydrates the scalp, it softens the hair and it also provides extra shine. But the best thing about it is that it repairs dry ends. A lot of people suffer from that in the Gulf region.

For the men, I would say definitely the gold facial. It’s one of the best facials because it enhances blood circulation and actually gives a glow afterwards.

3. From your experience from working with celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor and Cher, which hairstyles are most popular amongst celebrities?

In general, celebrities really do not wish to be compared to other celebrities.

They are very aware of the influence they have worldwide. They are responsible for establishing new trends, and they attempt to create looks that are most flattering to them.

A hairdresser should work to enhance the features that the celebrity already has to accentuate their beauty and their personality.

However, one thing that’s popular with most celebrities is changing hair colour and cut. Mostly, they do that to maintain the media and public’s interest.

4. Is the Middle Eastern taste and choice in hairstyles different to that of westerners’? If yes, how so?

Yes, definitely. Middle Eastern ladies tend to prefer longer lengths with darker hair tones compared to western ladies - who prefer short or middle-length hair with light hair tones.

Western ladies also change and experiment with their hair more often compared to Middle Eastern ladies who are a little more conservative.

As for men, westerners tend to be bolder compared to Middle Easterners - who have a very classic taste in cuts and grooming styles.

5. What were the most bizarre requests you or your staff were ever asked to do by a celebrity?

The most bizarre were requests to rinse a celebrity’s hair with Crystal Champagne and a specially flown in case of Hawaiian deep sea water.
