Low cost carrier flydubai on Wednesday said it plans to start flights to Chisinau in Moldova from November 20.

The airline will offer the first direct air link between Dubai and the Moldovan capital, flydubai said in a statement.

Chisinau is Moldova's most developed and economically prosperous city and has become the country's key service and industrial centre.

The city will become the 66th destination on flydubai's network, the carrier added.

Flydubai's CEO, Ghaith Al Ghaith, said: "This new direct route between Chisinau and Dubai continues flydubai's commitment to connecting underserved markets.

"Chisinau marks our 45th destination that did not previously have direct air links to Dubai served by a UAE national carrier."

Flydubai began operations to Europe in 2010. Since then, the carrier's network in this region has grown to 17 destinations. Passenger numbers for Flydubai's network in Europe has risen rapidly with a 60 percent increase since last year, the statement said.

"Chisinau offers our passengers another route into Europe and continues the expansion of Flydubai's network in the region. We look forward to the tourist and business opportunities that this link offers to both the UAE and Moldova," said Al Ghaith.

Flights between Chisinau and Dubai will operate on Wednesdays and Sundays.
