Food war erupts between rival listings mags

Time Out, published by ITP Consumer, has announced plans to hold its first restaurant awards in a head-to-head battle with Motivate Publishing’s What’s On Awards.

Time Out, published by ITP Consumer, has announced plans to hold its first restaurant awards in a head-to-head battle with Motivate Publishing’s What’s On Awards.

The Time Out Restaurant Awards will be held on 28 March at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Dubai and will be judged by the magazine’s editorial team. There will be 25 categories, with gold, silver and bronze trophies.

The date of the What’s On Awards, which are in their fifth year, has not been made public, but it is believed that both ceremonies will be held within days of each other.

The What’s On Awards will have 33 categories and cover other categories such as hotels, bars, concerts, sporting events and festivals, as well as restaurants. They are judged by members of the public who fill in voting forms. In 2005, 180,000 votes were cast for the awards, according to Motivate.

Justin Etheridge, Time Out publisher, said: “This is the first time that Dubai’s hospitality industry is being recognised publicly in a process that is based on quality, on consumer opinion and on the feedback of experienced restaurant reviewers and critics. A Time Out Restaurant Award will be a trophy worth having.”

Paddy Smith, deputy editor at What’s On, said: “It wouldn’t be the first time ITP has copied an idea which Motivate has pioneered, not only with magazines, but also with awards and events. Time Out is five years too late copying the What’s On Awards. The What’s On Awards remain the only awards of note in our opinion, and of the hospitality industry.” ITP also publishes Campaign.
