Foreign talent to move meeting industry forward

The Middle East’s meeting industry might be in its infancy, but an influx of foreign talent and an increase in training is seeing the sector quickly mature.

The Middle East’s meeting industry might be in its infancy, but an influx of foreign talent and an increase in training is seeing the sector quickly mature.

That’s the verdict from the director of the institutional division MCI and head of MCI’s Abu Dhabi office Ajay Bhojwani who said the region was “moving in the right direction” and at a “very fast pace”.

The current situation, whereby many corporations do not have specific meeting planners, can slow event planning, according to Bhojwani.

“If you have somebody who doesn’t understand the events process it becomes quite slow because it has to pass through all levels before it comes back to you,” he said.

However, the time to process and organise an event would soon speed up due to the influx of talent from countries where the meeting industry was more mature, he claimed.

“So you have that knowledge transfer in progress,” he added.

With an increasing numbers of courses and learning programmes on event management being initiated in the Middle East, it is also becoming easier to gain certification in event management, said Bhojwani.

“Then you have associations and international companies moving into the market with the know-how of how they want to run their events and what they want to achieve,” he added.
