Foundry gives power to the network

Foundry Networks has added two new switching systems to its Power over Ethernet (PoE) product range, featuring high redundancy and new security features.

Foundry Networks has added two new switching systems to its Power over Ethernet (PoE) product range, featuring high redundancy and new security features.

The new FastIron SX 800 and SX 1600 models feature redundant management modules at a ratio of 1:1, and can deliver 15.4 Watts of power over 10/100/1000 Mbit/s ports. Foundry is aiming the new models at enterprises running VoIP and high-capacity data systems.

“Enterprise customers are rapidly evolving their networks to enable total convergence,” said Bob Schiff, vice president and general manager for Foundry’s enterprise business unit.

“Next-generation networks must be built with the scalability, quality-of-service assurance, resilience and VoIP-readiness our customers need to achieve business efficiencies and ensure business continuity.”

The FastIron SX 1600 features 36 upstream ports at 10Gbit/s, and 384 downstream ports at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, in a 14RU-high enclosure – Foundry says it has the highest Class 3 PoE capacity in the market today. The FastIron SX 800 offers 20 10G ports, and 192 Gigabit PoE ports, in a 6RU-high box.

Both models feature dual load-sharing switch modules, redundant fans and N+1 redundant modules for system and PoE power.

In addition, they boast a number of security features, including policy-based network access control, IP source guard, dynamic ARP inspection and DHCP snooping work in unison to control network access and protect the network from spoofing and man-in-the-middle attacks.
