The ruler of Fujairah, one of the emirates that makes up the UAE Federation, has ordered the construction of a new 4,000-home city to be named Mohammed bin Zayed City.
Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi said the city would be a tribute to General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
The decision acknowledges his role in raising the profile of the country and strengthening its position regionally and internationally, news agency WAM reported.
The ruler directed authorities in the emirate to begin work on creating a city "equipped with all necessary services and facilities to meet the needs of all the citizens".
The city will be located in the Al-Hail area behind Fujairah International Airport, an area of about seven square kilometres
The first phase will comprise nearly 1,000 homes, while the second and third phases will comprise a further 3,000 homes.
The city will also include facilities such as mosques, schools, health clinics, parks and shops, WAM said.
Fujairah Municipality will play a key role in planning the infrastructure for the city, it added. For all the latest construction news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
