10 wardrobe hacks for the perfect closet

Your guide to a neat and easy-to-manage space

Do you have an overflowing closet, but still don’t know what to wear? Is your closet messy and too small for your clothes? These are common troubles for people with messy clothes. It’s not that you have too little clothes or too tight of a closet, it’s that you’re not organizing either properly. So here is your guide on how to create the p

1. We all have clothes that have been laying in our closets untouched for months, but that we’re too scared to throw away. To make it easier to decide which clothes to throw out, place a sticky note on the hangers of those clothes. If you wear them, remove the sticky note. If you don’t wear them in one year and the sticky note is still there, get rid of them. You can sell them on fashion app Shedd or donate them to charity.

2. Don’t you sometimes get closet envy from celebrities’ walk in closets? Your envy is not just because of the size, but because of the neatness of their closets, too. To get the same clean, organized look, hang your clothing in categories (top, pants, skirts, dresses) and subcategories (color, length). It’ll make everything easier to find.

3. Let’s be realistic, winter clothes take up A LOT of space. Considering it is summer for most of the year in Dubai, there’s no need to have winter clothes taking extra space in your closet. Store them away (neatly, of course) in drawers or special boxes. When it’s winter time, you can take them out and store some of your summer clothes instead.

4. This might seem like an insignificant change, but hanging your hanging in the same direction can actually create more space. A lot of hangers are made in a way that they have a hollow in the front and a slight hunch in the back. When you’re hangers are facing in the same direction, each hunch from the hangers should go into the hollow of the hanger next to it. This also looks neater and makes it easier to take clothes out and put them back in as there are no hangers bulging out of nowhere.

5. Don’t store your shoes where you can’t see them. We don’t mean that you should leave your shoes out in the open, but shoes should be stored in a way where they can be seen – not overlapping on top of each other. If you don’t have a special chest for your shoes that holds them neatly, use any book shelves as a display for them. This can even add a nice décor touch to your room. If you don’t have book shelves to spare, use clear boxes.

6. Having the perfect closet is about more than organization and décor, it’s also about smell. Often times than not, clothes develop a certain musty smell when stored. It’s not a bad smell, but it’s not a pleasant one either. To get rid of this, closet scenting sachets. We recommend lavender ones as the smell is not too strong as to overpower your perfume.

7. The one really annoying thing about clothes in drawers is that they become messy very quickly. They just lack the dividends to keep clothes looking neat and separate. The solution? Use dividends in your drawers. These can be found in home stores like IKEA.

8. Bags are just as messy as clothes. You have large bags, medium sized bags, satchels, clutches, and even wallets. And sometimes, when you have too many bags, you even forget that they’re there. So you can see your bags and keep them neatly stored, place the large ones on shelves and the smaller ones in dividends.

9. Jewelry is a nightmare to arrange if you’re not storing it correctly. The best way to store jewelry in your closet is to have it in drawers with dividends or have it in a special jewelry box. We love jewelry boxes from shops like Lifestyle in CenterPoint.

10. Belts and other accessories like scarves should not be thrown recklessly in some drawer. They should be placed neatly in dividends as well. We don’t recommend hanging them, because it looks messy as belts and scarves have different lengths and widths. They’re also easier to handle when they’re folded rather than when they’re hanging and keep falling off.
