In pictures: UAE-based artist Sanaa Merchant launches Z Gallery exhibition

Sanaa Merchant, a visual artist known for traditional Arabian themes with a modern perspective is currently exhibiting her artwork at Z Gallery in Four Points by Sheraton. The artist’s work ranges from ornamental works to modernism in abstract and calligraphic forms with the use of vibrant bold colors and dimensional forms giving it a thought-provoking essence; an attribute that makes it fitting for the contemporary gallery. Merchant also captures an extra touch of detail by using intense pen and ink compositions.

“Having been born in UAE, my surroundings inspire me. The rich Islamic heritage, long-standing Arab customs, the history of the country and the wealth of artifacts are reflected in abstract architectural forms, minarets, jewelry, khanjars, coins and other ornaments.” she said.

Merchant has become well renowned for adding modern elements in traditional themes. Her former medium sized watercolor paintings have evolved into large sized oil and acrylic paintings on canvas. This has appealed to many of her onlookers and buyers.

“The contemporary results of my work often breaks the rules of the conventional outlook usually imposed on artworks influenced by Arabic calligraphy. My style is contemporary and enriched with layered colors.” said Sanaa Merchant about her style.

Sanaa has also made valuable contributions to various art education forums and continues to gives back to her community by teaching art in various schools and colleges.
