How to travel in comfort and style
Tips from Hollywood stylist and British Airways’ style ambassador Elizabeth Saltzman

Opt for a carry-on: You don’t want a bag that is too big it will hurt and unbalance your shoulders. Saltzman recommends the Tumi Tegra Lite or the Victorinox Spectra 2.0 Carry-on. As for handbags, the Michael Kors Collection Large Leather Tote or Tory Burch Penn Applique Canvas Tote work perfectly for the ladies.

Pack versatile outfits: “If you pack a navy blue tuxedo as an outfit to wear in the evening, you can also use the tuxedo jacket with your jeans, white shirt, and flats for the day,” says Saltzman. She recommends suits by Brooks Brother, Yves Saint Laurent, and Tom Ford.

Face care: Your skin comes across a lot of dirt and dryness during travel. Keep it clean and well-moisturised with products such as Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream, Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, and Shiseido Eye Mask. Saltzman swears by them. She also freshens her face during the flight with Crème de La Mer Mist.

Infused water: If you’re not a huge fan of water’s lack of taste, pack some lemon or orange slices and mint leaves and add them to your water. You need to stay hydrated during travel.

Stretch: Saltzman recommends stretching every hour, “Do at least 30 seconds or one minute of exercise to get your blood circulating. I always stretch my arms over my head and move my hands like I’m playing a phantom piano. Try leaning against the doorway to stretch your shoulders and to open up your chest. For seated options, try a seated spinal twist, a half-forward bend, and slow neck rolls.”

Teeth kit: Travel kits with small toothpastes and toothbrushes can be found in several supermarkets including Waitrose. We can’t fly without toothpaste and a toothbrush, and neither can Saltzman. “Keeping my mouth fresh and my teeth clean is a priority and certainly one that is appreciated when greeting people after a long flight,” she says.

Tie your hair: Hair gets less static and dirty if it is tied up on a plane. Saltzman recommends twisting it up in a bun and letting it down during landing. “If I have to go straight to a meeting I use Frederic Fekkai Dry Shampoo to quickly freshen my hair,” she recommends.

Scarves or cardigans: Keep either one in your bag as they’re great for warmth on the plane. Scarves can be used as a blanket or neck warmer and cardigans are an easy-wear option.

Ladies, a quick touch up before landing: All you need is lipstick, bronzer, and concealer. Saltzman’s personal favourites are Charlotte Tilbury’s Kissing Lipstick in pale pink, Tom Ford bronzer, and Trish McEvoy concealer.

Use the flight as a mini-vacation: “You’re away from your emails and have the luxury of not being bothered for a few solid hours. So de-stress and just take some time to think and savour this uninterrupted sojourn,” says Saltzman.
