London 2012 Olympics mascots revealed

The odd-looking couple have been met with some criticism. Their creators said they are meant to resemble two drops of steel used to build the Olympic stadium. (Getty Images)

The mascots were launched at a school in Whitechapel, East London. The pupils seemed to like them. (Getty Images)

Wenlock is named after the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock that helped inspire Pierre de Coubertin to launch the modern Olympics, and Mandeville is called after Stoke Mandeville, the Buckinghamshire town where the Paralympics were founded. (Getty Images)

It took more than 18 months to create and design the mascots, involving complaints in Parliament, more than 40 focus groups and £400,000. (Getty Images)
