The MacBook Air is just three-quarters of an inch thick and weighs three pounds.

Apple worked with Intel to reduce the size of the processors in the MacBook Air to enable its small size. The laptop also includes a multi-gesture touchpad, similar to the iPhone. (GETTY).

The Apple faithful were predictably pleased with the new product, which is due to ship in the US in a few weeks time, with a retail price of $1,799. (GETTY)

Apple also unveiled the Time Capsule, a wireless backup appliance that will be available in 500GB and 1TB capacities.

Also announced were software updates for the iPhone and iPod touch, including wi-fi enabled location based services. (GETTY)
