Gartner: Vista still not ready for consumers

Fresh questions have been raised over whether Microsoft will be ready to make its Vista operating system generally available at the end of the month.

Fresh questions have been raised over whether Microsoft will be ready to make its Vista operating system generally available at the end of the month.

An analyst at market research firm Gartner claimed Vista may not be ready, even though it was released to volume license holders on November 30 last year.

Michael Silver, research vice president at Gartner, said there were a large number of drivers that were still at the beta stage that were "somewhat unstable" or did not support the full feature set of the devices.

Silver said Microsoft's own Applications Compatibility Toolkit and Windows Mobile Centre, both very important feature for enterprises, were also still in beta.

"The reality is that Microsoft could not have shipped Vista in November if real people were going to be using it en masse for real things right away," Silver commented, pointing out that businesses that did receive Vista last year would be testing for some time before end-users got to use the operating system (OS).

Silver said it was important Microsoft provided complete and stable driver support by launch as Vista would have a difficult time overcoming "troublesome" first impressions.
