Union urges greater cooperation and stricter penalties, senior official says.
The GCC Customs Union has called for greater cooperation and stricter penalties in an effort to tacklesmuggling and fraud in the region, a senior official told state news agency Wam on Sunday.
Speaking following a meeting of the GCC Customs Union Committee, Saeed bin Khalifa Al Marri, deputy director of the UAE Federal Customs Authority, said the union has urged customs authorities in the six Gulf states to cooperate more through the exchange of information to combat the problem.
Al Marri said the union had also called on authorities to impose harsher punishments on those who carry out smuggling and fraud operations.
