GCC tackles terror with media blitzkrieg

The six-nation organisation is preparing to produce over 100 television and radio programmes to help fight terrorism.

Television viewers across the Gulf are set to see a host of programmes focusing on the ills of terrorism and violence and the virtues of tolerance and co-existence.

According to a press statement released yesterday (March 14) by the Kuwait-based GCC Joint Program Production Institution, the media campaign will comprise three documentaries, 30 television series, 30 radio episodes, 30 public announcements and a 15-episode drama.

“The campaign, which calls for tolerance and acceptance of others, is being launched because of the events that have taken place in the region, “ said Hashim Al Shaks, the company’s executive director.

Al Shaks stressed the campaign would be predominantly targeting GCC citizens.

The move follows recent calls by regional leaders to curtail extremism and violence through media campaigns in the hope of raising public awareness on these issues.

The television and radio programmes will revolve around what Al Shaks claims will be the true values of Islam and the proper understanding of the religion.

The statement did not say when the new programmes would be ready or whether any broadcasters had shown interest in airing the shows.
