Abu Dhabi renames island to host financial district

Authorities say Sowwah Island renamed Al Maryah to better reflect history of emirate

Abu Dhabi’s Sowwah Island, home to the capital city’s new financial district, has been renamed Al Maryah Island, authorities in Abu Dhabi have said.

The new name of the island, named after the indigenous Arabian Oryx, will better reflect the history of the emirate, state news agency WAM reported.

“The move aims to showcase the true historical and environmental values of the UAE and the economical and urban importance of the island,” Abu Dhabi Municipality said in statement.

Al Maryah Island is one of several islands along Abu Dhabi’s coastline being redeveloped.

The 114-hectare island will feature Sowwah Square, a new central business district that aims to attract a wave of businesses to the UAE capital and help diversify its economy away from oil as part of the emirate’s 2030 vision.
