Aster chief says new $100m hospitals set to open in UAE

Six private institutions also planned for the Gulf region in next two years, says Dr Azad Moopen

Six new Medcare private hospitals are set to launch in the next two years in the UAE, according to Dr Azad Moopen, chairman and managing director of Aster DM Healthcare.

“In the next three months, we should be launching two Medcare hospitals – one in Sharjah, on King Faisal street and another one in Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road,” he told Arabian Business.

The overall cost of each hospital ranges between $40 million (AED150m) to $54 million (AED200m), with approximately 100 beds each.

“The four other [hospitals], all of different sizes, will take one and a half to two years [to complete],” he said.

Aster Pharmacy announced on Tuesday the first e-commerce store in the health and wellness space in the GCC, designed to be an extension to the existing Aster Pharmacies in the region.

The online platform currently offers a range of 10,000 products where customers can purchase medications, nutritional products, medical equipment skin and haircare products.

By mid-2017, 100,000 products will be available on the online platform, said the firm.

Aster DM Healthcare operates more than 15 hospitals, 80 clinics and 200 pharmacies in the Gulf and India.

“We already started [operations] in Jordan with 10 to 12 pharmacies already launched,” said Moopen. “Now we are looking [to expand] in other countries [in the Middle East].”
